An intensive course covering many aspects of the Business Analyst role from requirements interviews and use case models to testing and iterative planning concepts. Major techniques of both Structured and Object-Oriented (OO) techniques are addressed in this course. Each trainee receives a hard copy of all course material as well as a Job Aids booklet, containing useful templates, examples, guidelines and glossary for use back on the job.

- Business data modeling with Entity Relationship Diagrams
- Use Case diagrams and Use Cases
- Work Flow Analysis with Activity Diagrams and Decision Tables
- Data Flow Diagrams of Structured Analysis
- Principles of Object Oriented Analysis
- Structured Testing principles and methods
- Structured Walkthroughs
- Black Box requirements-based testing including boundary value analysis
Systems testing (Regression, volume, stress, usability, performance tests)
- Mapping Business Analysis tools to project development phases for:
- Waterfall methodologies (e.g., IPMP, PSDI, 3-D Process, etc.) Alterative methodologies (e.g., RUP)
Learning Objectives:
- Improve the quality of requirements gathering interviews
- Use UML 2 the current industry OO standard - in preparing business requirements and diagrams
- Describe complex business logic and ensure completeness of testing using Decision Tables
- Assure quality through structured verification and validation techniques and use-case scenario testing

Polly Pook, PhD
Senior Consultant, Noble, Inc.
Dr. Polly Pook has 25 years of experience in designing user-driven IT solutions. In 1982, she co-founded a start-up that developed the first windows system ever available on a PC. She went on to perform the Business Analyst role in capturing and documenting requirements for a CAD system (IBM) and for an award-winning line of scientific software (MacMillan Publishing). Dr. Pook served as VP and Director of Research for six years at iRobot Corp., makers of the RoombaÔ robotic vacuum cleaner. In addition to her consulting business, Dr. Pook teaches Business Analysis to a number of corporate clients from a wide range of sectors, including financial, healthcare, manufacturing, and software. She also teaches publicly for both Noble Inc. and the Boston University Corporate Education Center and is a frequent guest speaker at conferences worldwide. Pook received her undergraduate degrees from Brown University, her M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Rochester, and a postdoctoral fellowship from MIT. |
